There’s a denim jacket for everyone: get ready to meet yours

Although no one has informed the weather, we’re pretty sure that it’s nearly time to ditch the duvet-like puffy coat you’ve been encasing yourself in all winter, potentially in a ceremonial bonfire, in favor of something that doesn’t shield every inch of your body from wind and snow and sub-zero temperatures. But looking out of our windows every morning, trying to translate the temperature based on the people shivering or sweating below/the color of the sky/the angle of that tree in the wind, we realize it’s also not yet the time when we can confidently leave the apartment without some kind of defense against randomly dropping temperatures.

TL;DR: This is prime denim jacket time.

Once reserved for cowboys, the style that speaks of outdoorsy adventures, and sunsets for miles, and the smoky scent of last night’s campfire, is now the cool girl’s spring/early summer/late summer/early fall outer layer of choice. And the options available have evolved to match the jacket’s status as the must-have in-thing. Work out which one (or two) work for you with our helpful guide.

Clever curator

Who you are:

You were the first of your friends to wear a beret to brunch this spring. You’ve spent more hours of your life scrolling through Instagram to find out how to wear kitten heels than you’ve been asleep. You love to tick off the new trends every season, but you also like to find your own way. You’re into sushi burritos, ramen burgers, and cauliflower crust pizzas. You own five Little Black Dresses, all in a different cut. Seeing a classic look revitalized gives you warm fuzzy feelings.

Denim Jacket 2.0

The Denim Jacket 2.0 lives up to its name, with a new take that incorporates elements of another fashionista must-own item: the trench coat. The cropped, cape-like section at the top resembles those flaps on the chest of a classic mac (known as ‘gun flaps’ btw), and there are armholes through them so you can wear the long sleeves over your shoulder, like when posh people tie sweaters around their necks. And it still has all the elements you want in a denim jacket, made from soft cotton, with buttons down the front and pockets on the sides. This is one update we’ll be sticking with (unlike Snapchat).

Acceptable in the ’80s

Who you are:

You were considering getting a perm before it was cool again. Saved By The Bell and The Fresh Prince remain your two main sources of style inspiration. You kept all your old cassette tapes and CDs. Sometimes you wish you could play them, but you cba to find two AA batteries. Material Girl-era Madonna will always be your girl power heroine. TLC will always be the best girl band. You didn’t get the memo that scrunchies were dead until they ‘came back’. You don’t understand limiting your eye shadow use to neutral colors. You have more legwarmers than other people have socks.

Sit Back And Relax Oversized Denim Jacket

The Sit Back And Relax Oversized Denim Jacket is bringing back the decade when bigger and shinier and bolder was always better. It’s skipped the classic seam detailing and flap pockets that you see on more cowboy-adjacent designs, because the main event are those oversized sleeves, with elasticated cuffs at the ends, and the oversized bubble fit. Lisa and Kelly would approve.

L.A. Lady

Who you are:

You love hiking. Your drink of choice is the $15 smoothie you buy from your local organic-only juice bar, where the staff know your name and your star sign. Your Instagram is filled with sunsets, and motivational quotes, and acai bowls. Your car is your second home and your second handbag. When you find out someone is paying less than half of their monthly income on their rent, you consider quitting your four-year temporary stint at the diner and moving back to your small town. Then you find out another Soul Cycle is opening six blocks from your apartment, and you know you will never leave this glorious city. Also, grey skies disrupt your chi.

Living Free Cropped Denim Jacket

The Living Free Cropped Denim Jacket, which has that old soul vibe, thanks to the raw hem and distressed details, and that faded ombre look that’s already reminding us of piercing LA sunshine. I think we’ve just found your new hiking/juicing buddy.

Punked

Who you are:

You have at least five piercings, and you know where the next five are going. Ripped jeans are not just a fashion statement; they’re your way of life. If you don’t come back from a gig with a hoarse voice and a few bruises, you weren’t trying hard enough. 1977 to 1978 were the best years in music. You know the Ramones are not t-shirt manufacturers, and have thought deeply about which of their songs are your top five. Your profile photos are out of date within a week because you’re constantly changing your hair. You’re pretty sure you have more bleach than some professional cleaning companies. You’ve come to enjoy to smell, and aren’t sure how you feel about that.

The jacket we think you’ll L.O.V.E:

In My Head Studded Denim Jacket

The In My Head Studded Denim Jacket is working through punk’s greatest fashion hits, with that classic biker-style large notch collar, giant studs on the cuffs, distressed details that make it look like you’ve survived a few mosh pits together, and a metallic zipper detail around the hem, just because you can. Unsedated.

Think outside the crayon box

Who you are:

You’ve been skydiving. You have at least one spontaneous tattoo that you love ‘for the story’ if not the wonky design. You don’t really understand the color grey, or why it’s everywhere in public spaces and office buildings. Skittles are your favorite candy. Your aesthetic is ‘Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj raise a lovechild’. You don’t believe in guilty pleasure music, and your Spotify playlist of Britney Spears/Mariah Carey/the Glee soundtrack reflects this. You own a karaoke machine. You’ve found yourself singing in the street. You’ve tried every rainbow food trend going, because you firmly believe that everything is better when it looks like it was pooped out by a unicorn.

The jacket we think you’ll L.O.V.E:

Tapping In Denim Jacket

The Tapping In Denim Jacket is your banana milkshake-flavored ray of sunshine. It takes that classic boxy denim jacket, including buttoned sleeves, metallic buttons and seam detailing, and adds ruffles over the chest and around the back, and turns it daffodil yellow. Even if the weather hasn’t caught up to this notion of summer, you’ve got sunny vibes everywhere you skip.

Happy trending

Who you are:

You’ve waited up all night to get a just-dropped product. You’ve been a Vogue subscriber for so long that you’re pretty sure you could replace Anna Wintour tomorrow, should that be required. You have specialist underwear for all possible outfit configurations. Planning outfits is your form of meditation. Your bathroom cabinet contains enough half empty bottles of tried-and-failed beauty products to restock a Sephora. You’ve been forced to use the phrase, ‘It’s called fashion’ on the ensembly challenged more than once. Your friends sometimes think you’re psychic because you seem to have the latest looks the second they come out. But you know you’re just naturally stylish.

The jacket we think you’ll L.O.V.E:

Do It Anyway Off Shoulder Denim Top

The Do It Anyway Off Shoulder Denim Top is a mash-up of a denim jacket and an off shoulder blouse, and it’s one we won’t be sending back with a grossed-out face. It’s made from soft denim with that seam detailing, buttons down the front, and even pockets on the chest, cut off the shoulder and cropped short. Some of your fashion experiments might not work out how you planned (the less said about anything that happened in the early ’00s the better) but this is one with a happy ending.
